Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for an extended period when numerous of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and close to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a approach that remains especially affected by weather factors rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that this activity become unprofitable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
